3D tv’s, are they worth it?

Right now I’m going at 100km/h on the GO train and I came across an intresting article about futureshop carrying 3D tv’s. In short the article outlined the cost of these tv’s and what you acctully need to do to watch 3D. 2500$ for a samsung 3DTV, new 3D enabled blu ray (unspecified price), 70$ for the cable and the thing that caught my eye was 250$ for the glasses. So say you have 4 people in your house, that’s 1000$ of glasses?!

Obviously I understand that the price will go down dramaticly over the next x years, but what I fail to understand is why 3D? Its fine and dandy for movie theaters to have 3D, its a gimmick and it works, but I will not put on glasses just to watch normal tv (assuming all channels go 3D in the future). Its just stupid, and I sure won’t be able to convince my parents to do it.

The reason I say parents is because at the end of the day, its people like my parents “the average consumer” who watch tv, and if the market moves towards pissing them off with having glasses to watch stuff, then god help us all.

However, I doubt these things will ever take off simply because its too much of a gimmick.

What are your thoughts on this?
